The Budo Shingikan Jiu-Jitsu program is led by Johnny Berghian Sensei who is also a part of the Otake Han Doshin Kai (The OHDRJ Hombu Governing Board of Jujutsu) led by Eric Merrill Shihan.
Johnny Berghian Sensei is an Arizona native whose martial arts career started on the wrestling mat where he won a regional championship in high school (1993). In 1996 he began training at a branch dojo of Otake Han Doshin Ryu Jujutsu. After three years of training at this branch martial art dojo, he was elated to be accepted into the personal Jiu-Jitsu dojo of Eric Merrill Shihan (the Head of the Ryu / Martial Art School). He studied and trained assiduously under Merrill Shihan for the next six and half years in this amazing style of Jujutsu. It was during this time with Merrill Shihan that his training began to truly pay dividends within the martial arts and Berghian Sensei accelerated appreciatively in his Jujutsu training.
After Merrill Shihan’s retirement from active teaching Jujutsu in 2005, Berghian Sensei (along with Phil Hillard Sensei) opened East Valley Jujutsu Academy in Tempe, AZ. When Hillard Sensei moved out of Arizona to pursue a doctorate in Chiropractic medicine, Berghian Sensei assumed sole teaching responsibilities at East Valley Jujutsu Academy. In 2011 he was invited by Darrell D’Antonoli Sensei to join the Budo Shingikan Dojo in Mesa, Arizona and to teach Otake Han Doshin Ryu Jujutsu. Berghian Sensei currently holds the rank of Godan, 5th Degree Black Belt (2008) and a Renshi Instructor License (2009) in Otake Han Doshin Ryu Jujutsu.
Berghian Sensei's ability to instruct technically complex martial art maneuvers is truly amazing as he instructs extremely well at all levels. Whether you are an accomplished martial artist or a beginner, Berghian Sensei has the patience and skill to educate at the students level.
