Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. If I encourage my kids to take up Martial Arts won’t they become bullies at school?

A. No. This is completely unlikely, as our Kids Martial Arts program teach self control and improves their self esteem. Frequently kids lack self esteem and therefore confidence, which in many cases leads to them being bullied at school.

Q. Should kids be encouraged to fight?

A. No of course not.

Some parents mistakenly believe Martial Arts to be the first step in the bullying process, whereas the opposite is the case, and the kids soon become the leaders in their school and community. It must be stressed that sadly with MMA becoming so popular the misconception is that Martial Arts are about fighting. THEY ARE NOT and recently this has been the biggest misconception of martial arts training. Martial Arts are about finding peaceful resolutions in life and simply ending conflict.

So what are Martial Arts according to the Budo Shingikan School of Japanese Martial Arts in Mesa, Arizona?

The Budo Shingikan Martial Arts training, especially in our kids programs are about self control, knowing that you have the knowledge rather than the strength to beat your opponent. It is about technique and the ability to turn the other person’s aggression to your advantage. It is the art of self defense and that of survival.

The uniforms or suits that are worn are the same except for the color of the belt which confirms the standard or rank that the student has attained, it reflects the work they have put into their training and the achievement through their dedication that they have made.  However we are not a "Black Belt School" nobody is guaranteed a black belt at our Dojo. All promotions in our school MUST be earned. You cannot buy skill you must diligently work at it and attain it yourself; we simply provide the guidance and the path. All testing is by "Invitation Only" meaning that your child will only test when invited by Sensei.

Our Kids Martial Arts program is a type of practice that many kids will be happy to participate in as it is non academic, and without them realizing it, it builds their self esteem, it teaches them respect, and above all it builds their self confidence and gives them utilitarian skills in life.

Admit it. When the going gets tough at home, we've all plopped the kids in front of the television and breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, we can get started on dinner, maybe check email or sort that massive pile of laundry.
But when your five-year old yells at you "Mom, Kids Rule!" or your ten-year old horrifies you with language that would make a sailor blush, you realize there must be something amiss with what these "family programs" really teach our kids. And sadly, it’s happening all over the media today, from sports to cartoons, and our children are learning things that we, as parents, vowed we would never teach them. Old fashioned values like respect and self-discipline, seems to have been forgotten, replaced by the dreaded "bling bling" pop culture of today.

Just the thought of your angelic three-year old morphing into a designer-clad, smart-mouthed, money-worshipping, me-obsessed, lay about is enough to make any parent consider that threatening military school brochure, but there is a solution out there to consider.

Martial Arts training!

From Ninja Turtles to The Karate Kid;

You and your kids have all seen the flying kicks, battle cries and mighty chops of their favorite TV characters, as they beat the bad guys to submission, but, you may ask, how on earth can these acts of violence teach my child anything worthwhile?

First, know that what you see on television is a far cry from what real martial arts are all about. The fact is martial arts training is based on non-violence.

Originating in Asia, mainly Japan, China and Korea, martial arts range from a variety of types and styles, all of which are based on well-rounded, moral teachings. The beauty of learning martial arts is that it encompasses not just the physical aspect of the "sport", but mental and emotional lessons as well.

Comparing that to other kid's activities and sports, where fierce competitiveness and "winning at all costs" seems to be the order of the day, it's not surprising that many children grapple with issues of self-esteem and misplaced aggression.

Now imagine your child actually learning valuable life lessons, skills that he or she will take throughout life, laying the foundation for a happy, well-adjusted and fulfilled adult life.

Why Aikido?
The Budo Shingikan Kids Martial Arts Program uses the martial art of Aikido. Aikido is an extremely versatile martial art and strives to teach the physical side of self defense along with the internal side of character development, interpersonal skills, self control, respect for others, and the list goes on. A child learning Aikido learns very quickly that you cannot use Aikido without having someone attack them since this wonderful art is 100% defensive. There is no kata taught in these classes. The children learn what it is like to be grabbed or to have their partners strike at them and then further to feel what its like to defend against that. This teaches them not to be afraid of someone attacking them as it is all done in the safety of the Dojo under supervision. They learn to be more confident almost instantly after a few classes and further learn valuable skills to defend themselves against would be bullies or anyone who wishes to harm them. Aikido is the most practical form of self defense for children to learn and enjoy and that is why we base our children';s program on this amazing martial art: Aikido!
